Ultrafiltration ( UF ) of water is a method of purification with an ultrafiltration membrane, also called a capillary membrane.
The capillary membrane (UF - membrane) is the latest generation of mechanical filter. The size of the holes in the capillary membranes is from 0.01 to 0.5 microns. In addition to bacteria and solids, ultrafiltration also removes viruses. Ultrafiltration membranes do not remove minerals from the water. Capillary membrane drinking water systems include, in addition to the membrane, several other filters specifically selected for drinking water. The systems can be connected to the ice maker of a refrigerator.
HOW DOES THE CAPILLARY MEMBRANE WORK? Capillary membranes are made of thin hollow fibers in the form of tubes. Their diameter decreases from the outside to the inside of the fiber. Large, water-contaminating particles are retained on the surface of the capillaries (surface filtration), while smaller ones pass further into the tubules until they are retained (two-stage deep filtration). This allows the retention of 99.8% of bacteria, spores, fungi and viruses. The total area of the capillary membrane is about 1.5m2.
Three stages of capillary membrane water filtration : ► surface filtration; ► initial deep filtration; ► final filtration - removal of impurities larger than 0.002 microns.
The membrane filters 100% of the water - does not discharge water into the sewer, does not demineralize the water.
ADVANTAGES OF CAPILLARY MEMBRANE: • 100% filtration, does not discharge water into the sewer; • low operating costs; • removes Cryptosporidium, Guardia and other harmful pathogens; • removes Salmonella eutericlis (3.2 microns); • removes Escherichia coli (3.1 microns); • removes Lactobacillus delbrueckii (1-9 microns).
After depletion of the membrane capacity, it becomes clogged, which leads to a sudden drop in pressure. The life of the membrane depends on the quality of the water, but should not exceed 18 months. Capillary membranes do not remove the minerals contained in the water.
HOW OFTEN DO THE FILTERS BE CHANGED AND WHAT IS THE PRICE? In normal home use, the filters are replaced every 6 to 12 months (approx. 8000 l). The price of the whole set of filters is GBP £49.50. The capillary membrane (GBP £ 39.90) is changed every 12 to 24 months. For about GBP £3.50 per month you will have 660 litres of very well purified water, which your family will be able to use not only for drinking but also for cooking. The water we buy is usually used only for drinking. However, we do not think that we cook with the same tap water that we cannot drink directly.
