softening : Water softening occurs when water passes through an ion exchange resin, where the calcium and magnesium ions responsible for its hardness are replaced by sodium. When the ion exchange capacity of the resin is depleted, it is automatically regenerated with a salt solution.

The frequency of regenerations depends on the consumption and the degree of hardness of the water.
