K ow softener works?

The softener has a special ion exchange resin inside, which is negatively charged. Ions dissolved in water, causing hardness (especially calcium and magnesium), are positively charged. The softener removes the ions that cause hardness from the water, replacing them with sodium ions, thus softening the water. Such ion exchange occurs millions of times during the whole process of water softening. During the exchange, the ions causing the hardness of the water are deposited on the resin. When the ion exchange capacity of the resin is depleted (usually after a few days of operation depending on the hardness and the amount of water), it is automatically regenerated. Then, water and saline solution (so-called brine) passes through the resin. The sodium ions included in the saline solution are replaced by the ions causing the hardness of the water,
